This school uses its own 11+ entrance test. The exam lasts 60 minutes. NGHS is one of the country's leading girls' schools. The school welcomes girls from the town of Newport as well as further afield from Telford, Stafford, Shrewsbury, Market Drayton and Wolverhampton. In November 2022, NGHS was graded outstanding in every category of the Ofsted inspection framework. In December 2025, the school was ranked number 1 in Shropshire and number 9 in the West Midlands for student achievement by The Sunday Times Parent Power Survey.
